Download the Shukumisa Campaign Monitoring Report

Here’s a bit of history about the Shukumisa campaign. As part of the pilot project  of the Shukumisa  campaign in 2008, undertook to examine the extent to which the South African Police Services (SAPS) and Departments of Justice and Constitutional Development (DoJ&CD) and Health had met their commitments to providing services for victims of sexual offences.

This activity was done as part of the 2008 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence.

To carry out this monitoring campaign, Shukumisa partners visited:

  • Thirty-four police stations in the three provinces of Gauteng (23 stations), North West (3 stations) and Western Cape (8 stations);
  • Sixteen courts distributed across Gauteng (10 courts), North West (3 courts), Free State (1 court) and Western Cape (2 courts); and
  • Two hospitals in Gauteng and one hospital in the Free State.

Sixteen monitors from participating organisations and volunteers from the community conducted the monitoring.

No particular procedure was used to select the sample of courts, police stations and hospitals; rather, selection was based on which stations were in the monitoring organisation’s area of operation.

Download “Hate Crimes: The Rise Of Corrective Rape In South Africa”

Our new constitutional order is based on the powerful principle that recognises the inherent worth and dignity of each person – violence against women on the basis of their sexual orientation violates that principle and threatens the promising, exciting, but fragile human rights system we have put in place, says Judge Judy Kollapen, chair of the South African Human Rights Commission.

South Africa: Inside the Cycle of Rape (One warden’s work with sex offenders)

Check out the video “South Africa: Inside the Cycle of Rape.” This 11-minute documentary contains the testimonies of perpetrators of rape in a South African prison, and follows them through a rehabilitation process.

The video was shot inside the Maximum Security facility at Pollsmoor Prison located on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa.  The process of securing access to film inside the prison took years of negotiation with the South African government and then involved a separate permission process with the prison gangs once inside the prison.
